The Short Answer
For a first trip, most people do best with two or three bases: the Arenal Volcano area (stay in La Fortuna) for hot springs, waterfalls and hanging bridges, then a beach. Which beach depends on your airport:
- Flying into San José (SJO): pair La Fortuna with Manuel Antonio, where rainforest and beach meet inside a national park. Add Monteverde if you have ten days.
- Flying into Liberia (LIR): pair La Fortuna with the Guanacaste beaches. Tamarindo, Flamingo, Conchal and the Papagayo resorts are 30 to 90 minutes from the airport, and this is the driest part of the country.
- Want surf, yoga and dirt roads: Nosara or Santa Teresa on the Nicoya Peninsula.
- Want wildlife above all: Tortuguero for turtles and canals, or the Osa Peninsula for Corcovado National Park.
Drive times are what catch people out. Roads are mostly two-lane, mountain routes are slow, and it gets dark around 5:30–6 pm all year. A route that looks like 150 km often takes three to four hours. Our plan: no more than one long travel day for every two or three nights.

Costa Rica's Main Bases Compared
| Base | Best for | From SJO | From LIR | Nights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| La Fortuna & Arenal | Volcano, hot springs, waterfall, hanging bridges | About 3 hrs | About 3 hrs | 2–3 |
| Monteverde | Cloud forest, night walks, birds | 3–3.5 hrs | 2.5–3 hrs | 2 |
| Manuel Antonio | Beach plus national park, monkeys, sloths | About 3 hrs | About 5 hrs | 3–4 |
| Guanacaste beaches | Dry weather, resorts, calm bays, sunsets | 4–5 hrs | 30 min–1.5 hrs | 3–5 |
| Nosara | Surf, yoga, quiet jungle beaches | About 5 hrs | 2.5–3 hrs | 3–5 |
| Santa Teresa & Montezuma | Surf, sunsets, boho villages | 5–6 hrs incl. ferry | 4–5 hrs | 3–5 |
| Uvita & Dominical | Whales, the Whale's Tail, quiet beaches | 3.5–4 hrs | 5.5–6 hrs | 2–4 |
| Osa Peninsula | Corcovado, remote eco-lodges | 6–7 hrs or a 1-hr flight | 8+ hrs | 3–4 |
| Puerto Viejo & Cahuita | Caribbean culture, reef beaches, food | 4.5–5 hrs | 7+ hrs | 3–4 |
| Tortuguero | Turtles, canal boat tours | 4.5–5 hrs by road and boat | 7+ hrs | 2 |
Times are typical door-to-door driving estimates without long stops, rounded up from route planners because traffic, roadworks and rain slow things down. Domestic flights to Quepos, Drake Bay, Puerto Jiménez, Tortuguero, Nosara and the Cóbano airstrip near Santa Teresa cut the longest journeys to under an hour.

How Many Bases for Your Trip?
- 7 days: two bases. La Fortuna (3 nights) and Manuel Antonio (3–4 nights) from San José, or La Fortuna and Tamarindo or Flamingo from Liberia.
- 10 days: three bases. Add Monteverde (2 nights) between Arenal and the coast, or swap the beach for Nosara or Santa Teresa if you surf.
- 14 days: four bases. Add the Osa Peninsula or Uvita in the south, or Tortuguero and the Caribbean coast in the east.
Our itinerary guide lays out each version night by night, with the drive between every stop.
San José or Liberia?
Juan Santamaría (SJO), just outside San José in Alajuela, is the bigger airport and the better start for Arenal, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio, the south Pacific and the Caribbean. Guanacaste Airport (LIR) in Liberia puts you near the northwest beaches and is about three hours from La Fortuna.
Flying into one and out of the other often saves a full day of driving. If your flight lands late or leaves early, spend the night near SJO rather than in central San José. Our San José guide covers both.
When to Go, and How It Changes Where to Stay
The dry season runs from about mid-December to April across the Pacific side and the Central Valley. Guanacaste is the driest region, and the beaches there are at their best then. From May to November is the green season: mornings are usually clear and afternoons bring rain, the south Pacific and Osa get the heaviest downpours in September and October, and some lodges close for part of that time.
The Caribbean coast follows its own pattern. It has no proper dry season, but September and October are often its calmest months, just as the Pacific is at its wettest. That makes Puerto Viejo and Tortuguero a good fall choice.
